Blood-glucose control milk powder for diabetes care passes Phase IIA trials
Local newspaper The China Times reported today that a new method of blood-glucose control had proven effective in Phase IIA clinical trials in Taiwan.
Called Glucose Tolerance Factor (GT&F), the product is a modified milk power, the invention a result of collaboration between National Chunghsing University and local company Maxluck Biotech Corp.
The coordinator of the research team that invented GT&F, Chunghsing Associate Professor Frank Chinhung Mao, said that the university and Maxluck began cooperation three years ago, with GTF the result of two years intensive research and effort.
The group selected for the clinical trial were type II diabetes mellitus patients. This type of diabetes accounts for 95 percent of all diabetes cases, according to Mao. The two-year, 156-patient trial was conducted at 4 local universities; National Taiwan University Hospital, Taichung Veteran's General Hospital, National Chingkung University Hospital, and Tri-service General Hospital.
Mao stated that after four months of consuming GT&F, trial subjects displayed significant improvements in sensitivity to insulin, which leads to a lowering of blood sugar levels on an empty stomach, with women displaying more obvious improvements. The trial indicated that positive results can be seen within only one or two month's consumption of the milk powder, all without side effects, according to Mao.
Mao said that GT&F, once commercialized, would allow for considerable cost savings for the treatment of diabetes patients.
